10 Houseplants That Need Almost Zero Sunlight

Plants that need zero to little sunlight are ideal for newbies, people with an unpredictable schedule, and people who want a garden without the maintenance and hassle of it all. You can also find a plant light on Amazon and use it for your houseplants. If you want to use artificial light, then adding a GE bulb to your lamp and turning it towards the plant also works. Ensure your plant light or lamp is close to the plants, about 6-9 inches of distance.
Lucky Bamboo- A symbol of luck and success, the lucky bamboo needs very little sunlight. So if your home has low, indirect light then this plant is perfect for you. It does need some light though so be careful of putting in a dark area. You could use a plant light during winter if need be. The canes, stalks, or stems (whatever you prefer to call them) resemble the canes of a bamboo plant, hence the name. It is actually a dracaena. Don’t let the soil of the bamboo get too dry. Overwatering can cause root rot so you need to keep a balance. Bamboo does not need much water to survive, but it can be grown in water as well. If you choose to grow your bamboo in water, make sure the roots always stay covered with water. Replenish your lucky bamboo with fresh water every seven to ten days to keep it hale and hearty.
ZZ Plant- Often suggested to beginners and complete newbies, the ZZ plant is impossible to kill. It is resilient and has big, shiny leaves which flourish even in complete neglect. You must have seen them at malls or department stores due to their low-maintenance qualities. You can use a plant light or artificial light to keep them happy.
Golden Pothos- Also called as ‘Devil’s Ivy’, it needs indirect light so you can keep them near east-facing windows. The paler the leaves, the more light your plant needs. During winter, you can use a plant light to supplement limited sunlight. The soil can be slightly damp but you should ensure the roots are not standing in water.
Red Prayer Plant- This unique plant is called so because at night, its leaves fold like hands during prayer. They are gorgeous and bright because of their pink color underside on the leaves. You can also leave them hanging in pots or baskets. They thrive in low light environment but may need more light to fold completely.
Areca Palms- This tropical plant will cheer your house up and act as an air purifier and humidifier for your indoor space. It is the easiest palm tree to grow indoors and can produce yellow flowers which look stunning.
Peace Lily- One of the most common and popular plants, the Peace Lily isn’t really a lily. It has tall, beautiful white flowers that bloom throughout the entire year. While they don’t need a lot of light, if they get access to natural sunlight then they grow pretty tall and produce flowers regularly. You can keep them in a floor planter because they can grow up to 40 inches tall. You will know it needs water when it gets droopy. It is quite sturdy and pretty so makes for a great addition to your home.
Spider Plant- The spider plant can survive for years in indirect light and thrive even if its been lacking water for a while. It can live in fluorescent lighting as well. During the winter months, it needs very little water. The spider plant produces tiny white flowers and offshoots that look like baby spiders. You can repot the offshoots and put them in cute pots so that they can make excellent gifts for friends and family. It is also an air purifier and can look nice in hanging planters.
Kangaroo Fern- The native Australian plant is a great addition to your home as it can grow easily and thrives in high humidity. Most people keep them in their bathroom since it requires little to no attention and maintenance.
Snake Plant- The variegated leaves of this plant make it look pretty and the low maintenance makes it perfect for new plant owners. Snake Plant needs very little water, grows several feet tall, and is impossible to kill.
Peperomia- Peperomia prefer to be out of direct light and are natural air purifiers. They love humidity so you can put them in your bathroom if you wish to freshen it up.
