Things to Know Before a Yoga Class
Yoga is a great way to take care of your physical and mental health. It can rejuvenate you and refresh your mind. For people who haven’t done any physical activity in years, yoga can also be a good way to start. It has variations and modifications which can go light to intensive depending on your capacity. We have spoken about the benefits of yoga and exercise for your health and mind previously.
If you plan to do Yoga, you will either join a class or watch a video online. With most of us stuck at home due to the pandemic, instructors now offer paid online sessions as well. These sessions are excellent because the instructor has live access to you and can teach you the right form and style. Doing Yoga incorrectly can result in joint pain, pulled muscles, or body aches. But if you want to join a class or a studio, that’s okay too. If you haven’t done a yoga class before, it can feel intimidating. To make things super easy for you, we have created a list of things you must know before you take a Yoga Class.
Be Prepared- Depending on the yoga class, you may need certain props and items. Always carry your own yoga mat. Certain studios offer their Yoga mats but remember they may be used previously by other members. Take a napkin or cloth to wipe your face and sweat. You can take a foam roller if you wish to help with stretching. Have a water bottle handy to drink in breaks or after the class. Some people also carry a granola bar to munch on after the class. Or you can take some nuts or an apple.
Empty Stomach- Doing yoga after a heavy breakfast or meal is a really bad idea. Even with light yoga, your body may feel sick or exhausted after a meal. Eat a meal or breakfast at least an hour before doing yoga. If you feel you are starving, eat a banana or have a protein shake 30-45 minutes before class. Similarly, don’t eat anything immediately heavy after class. Eat a meal about an hour or two after your yoga class.
Arrive Early- For your first class, arrive at least 10 minutes early to the studio. You can introduce yourself, get yourself registered, meet the teacher, talk about your needs, and find a nice spot. Regular members will have their rituals and going early will help you familiarize with them. Arriving early also gives you the chance of making new friends and finding a Yoga buddy. The trainer will know to keep an eye on you since its your first time and teach you the correct poses.
Trust your Instructor- It doesn’t matter if you have been practicing for years at home or read something on Google, trust your instructor. Move at the pace they suggest and pay attention to their form and posture. Accept their comments without any malice. They understand how to improve your health and body so you will have to learn to trust them. If you have any doubts or comments, share it with your teacher after class. They will be able to modify any pose for you if you are unable to do so or guide you through it.
Relax- Yoga is about letting the tension in your body go and controlling your breathing. It involves you relaxing and trusting the process. Don’t stress and worry about how you look. Nobody is paying any attention to you. Focus on your breathing, loosening the tension in your body, and immersing yourself in the pose and the music. Yoga will refresh your body and mind if you do it correctly.
Small Steps- As a beginner or a first timer, don’t expect to match your teacher’s flexibility or the other member’s posture. You will reach there in your time. Comparing your journey will others will only bring stress and anxiety. Have minimum expectations and take each class an opportunity to learn a bit about your body and mind. Yoga is not just about weight loss or exercise, it is about mindfulness, meditation, and calmness. Take each class slowly and breathe it all in.
Right Clothing- You can’t wear gym clothes or running shoes to a Yoga Class. Wear loose, breathable clothing that makes it easy to stretch and move. You may be bending a lot or shifting so wear that a top that makes you feel comfortable. Don’t wear socks as they may graze against the mat or feel slippery. Yoga is best done barefoot. Many popular brands have yoga pants available which make stretching easy and comfortable.
These insider tips will definitely make you feel comfortable and confident when entering a yoga studio or class. It will make your first class go smoothly and let you immerse yourself fully in the Yoga experience.
